My experience has been the same -- no problem buying gift cards using a credit card. Since the card is only good for merchandise purchases at WalMart/Sam's, effectively you've just prepaid for some merchandise using your credit card. The T&Cs on all gift cards are designed to prevent you from converting them back to cash.
