I guess my question about the train would be why.

While the leg from kuala lumpur to butterworth is nice, there are alternatives for the other legs. for example the train doesn't go through Melaka in Malaysia, and it's possible to go from Penang to Lankawe.

And Penang Island is well worth spending some time on
