LAX-FRA-CPT is a decent way to go, but you will most likely have a very long layover in FRA. JNB give you more options on LH too.
I've found that flying from the west coast to Munich then taking a puddle jumper to FRA is the most efficient way so you don't have that 10 hr layover in Frankfurt.
