United is accommodating Independence Air customers

On Thursday, January 5th, Independence Air voluntarily discontinued scheduled flights.

United is committed to serving all customers and will accommodate the travel needs of Independence Air passengers. Affected customers may call United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED1 to inquire about our special assistance standby fare or confirmed space options.

Special assistance standby fare

United provides a $50 (includes taxes) one-way standby fare to passengers holding Independence Air tickets purchased on or before Jan.5, 2006, and for travel beginning on or after that date. With limited exceptions, standby travel is offered for the same dates and city pairs as ticketed by Independence Air. Standby customers will be accommodated on the first available United, TedSM or United Express® operated flight. Ticketing and payment of the $50 fee can only be completed at a United ticket counter on the same day of travel. For customer convenience, all airport-ticketing fees are waived for this offer.

On the date of travel, proof of purchase of confirmed travel on Independence Air must be provided upon check-in.

Qualifying proof of purchase includes:
paper tickets issued on Independence Air ticket stock,
an Independence Air e-ticket confirmation letter,
an Independence Air itinerary card showing ticketed travel, and
an Independence Air e-ticket receipt.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the $50 standby option
Q: Will I be able to standby for a flight to/from another airport within the same city (i.e., may I fly to Chicago Midway airport even though my original Independence Air ticket was for travel to Chicago O'Hare airport?
A: Yes, provided that your travel is on a United, Ted or United Express operated flight. United serves the following cities with alternate airport options:

Chicago - Chicago O'Hare (ORD)/Chicago Midway (MDW)
New York - Newark (EWR)/New York LaGuardia (LGA)/New York Kennedy (JFK)
Washington D.C. - Washington Reagan (DCA)/Washington Dulles (IAD).

Q: I have purchased this standby offer, but I have decided not to use it. Will I be able to obtain a refund?
A: No. However, all wholly unused standby tickets can be applied at full value for future travel on United Airlines.

Q: Will I be charged the airport-ticketing fee?
A: No. For customer convenience, the airport-ticketing fee will be waived for the duration of the offer.

Q: Do I have to provide proof of my ticketed travel on Independence Air?
A: Yes. Proof of purchase of Independence Air tickets for travel beginning on or after January 5, 2006 is required at time of ticketing at a United ticket counter. Qualifying proof of purchase includes paper tickets issued on Independence Air ticket stock, an Independence Air e-ticket confirmation letter, an Independence Air itinerary card showing ticketed travel or an Independence Air e-ticket receipt.
