As for availability, when expertflyer.com has shown D seats available with BA, AA and QF have both in recent past insisted there were none and waitlisted me, so I had to call BA and, sure enough, they could confirm my seats.
When just trying to get a D seat confirmed, a BA ATW desk would not help any more than the normal reservations staff. For actually booking the ticket, then the best place (imo) to buy is from AA to get th lower total cost
