Coffins because they look like coffins.
For those who may not remember, the MD in the name comes from the McDonnell-Douglas company that made them. (It, in turn, was the product of merger between Douglas Aircraft, maker of the DC series, and McDonnell Corporation, which focused on military planes such as the Phantom fighter jet. MD-80s evolved from the DC-9.) Boeing bought MD in 1997.
