Just a few placenames in the US:
In Virginia for Norfolk we say Naw-fk, with a strong emphasis on Naw,
Gloucester is Gloss-ter, Staunton is Stan-ton, short a....In North Carolina, Beaufort is Bow-fort, but in South Carolina it is Bew-fort. Most everyone says Nevahda (where LAS is located ), except for the people of that state who say Nevada, short a. In Massachusettes Hingham is Hing-em. As for Moskva, I think that is the generally accepted transliteration for Moscow in cyrillic. Those of us here DO try to pronounce placenames in the UK correctly or at least as well as we know how, and I've learned so much on this thread that has shed light on lots of names. Can someone please tell me how to pronounce Boscastle in Cornwall? Thanks much!
