I'd fully agree, but the point is that mandatroy u/g will just get you from compact to intermediate and as flylogic suggests if you have a good rate that won't save much more than 5$. If you rent elsewhere than europe everything is fine. I changed all my european rentals to Sixt and I am quite happy that I did so.
