Not true. As an EXP, I can upgrade a companion. But I have to use my stickers (instruments, in UA-speak) -- they don't get complimentary upgrades like I do. This hasn't been an issue for me so far, because I have plenty of stickers left over from my pre-EXP days. If and when I run out of them, I can purchase more for my companion upgrades at $30 each.
And for me and many others on this board, UA's lack of complimentary upgrades for 1Ks is a big reason why we're staying with AA

To each his/her own, and fortunately we have two airlines with different upgrade systems to satisfy everyone

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AA does not have a SWU equivalent. The SWU allows you to be upgraded at time of booking and you can choose your seat at time of booking. The AA EXP must wait to see if he/she is upgraded.
