I once drove AMA to ABQ in winter and the headwind was brutal and yes, it made it much more tiring, and it was worse in the afternoon. There are some decent motels (nothing fancy, but decent) in Tucumcari, but that may not put you far enough along.

I would definitely stop at the Frontier Restaurant in ABQ; an American classic.
