What's D-1 (D1?) status?

I was flying on 12/24 and overheard half of a loud cell-phone conversation with a passenger who was flying as a D-1 (D1?) and thought he should have been able to fly confirmed on a non-stop flight, and was upset when he didn't get the seats he thought he was entitled to. He apparently instead got routed with a connection. I assume D1 is something NRSA, and know that as the name implies, you're rarely "confirmed" unless flying on AA business (which it's unlikely he would be on Christmas Eve). I don't know who this guy was talking to, but he was trying to find out the name of the gate agent in his originating city, and obviously wanted to make life difficult for that agent who didn't give him the seat he wanted. (And yes, I did do a search. Nothing came up for D-1 and apparently D1 is either too short or too common to search.)

As an aside, I'm always amused by the holiday passengers. I was boarding with the exec plat/plat group, and the couple behind me was complaining about being in the "back of the bus," and how they are never seated "that far back." I glanced at their boarding passes...they're platinums who are sitting in the emergency exit row! (Including 20B, where I like to sit, so I was forced to sit in 21B )
