Need I-40 Road Trip Advice Please

Hellow fellow FTers!

My father has taken a job in Phoenix. He plans to drive from the Knoxville area in East Tennessee out via I-40. I'm sure you travel lovers here can help me with some info.

I believe it will take him 4 days in transit. The yahoo maps says 29 hours and a few minutes for the trip. Factor in stops for rest and food and I'd figure out 32 hours total.

He's planning on traveling 8 hours per day, and I am trying to figure out his best stopping points. I've never (and wouldn't either) driven across the country, and I'm guessing some travel lover here has. I'll take 4 hours in flight over 4 days in a car anyday, but my dad has no choice on this.

I've tried the mapquest and yahoo map service, but I cannot find a link that will break the trip up into say 500 mile incriments. Does anyone know a tool that can do this?

If not, what I can figure is that his stopping points should be:

Night 1: Little Rock
Night 2: Somewhere beyond Oklahoma City
Night 3: Albequerque
Night 4: Phoenix

Is this doable? If not, what would be?

Also, if anyone can recommend any good hotels along the way, that would be great. He's top tier in Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, and HI and Gold in Starwood.

He won't be doing much sightseeing along the way, but if there's any can't miss things along the way, please also let me know about that.

Thanks in advance for your help and insight.

Happy New Year to you all!
