If you search past threads on this, it appears to be all over the map. Over the years, I have a couple of times received AE points without asking. I have also been handed a form letter on board to send in for points (the last one was for 4,000 points for a six-hour mechanical delay). My wife had a significant delay in August and received a $100 credit towards future travel.
