Actually, except for recent graduates (i.e., graduated within the last year), you have to make a donation to MIT in order to receive your "free" Tech Review subscription. I believe that the minimum annual donation that will trigger a "free" subscription is $35; at least, that was the minimum back in the 1980s and early 1990s. My wife and I (both MIT alums) used to make separate donations each year, and consequently, we received 2 issues every month. It seemed very wasteful, but we didn't do anything to stop the second subscription for many years. Finally, about 10 years ago, we consolidated our donations into a single annual donation in my name alone. We now receive only 1 issue.
For the record, I do read Tech Review, albeit not cover to cover and typically about 2-3 months after we receive it. I liked the magazine much better before its "makeover" several years ago.
