I assume that when you say "right before the gate" you mean that extra station that's right before the RCC - that's been there for awhile. Also, I've only noticed the security seals in the lavs - were there more than usual?
The extra screening and the thorough patdown has been around for a while. I was in FRA in November 2001 and have been there a few times since and noticed the extra thorough patdown and second set of security checks for all flights going to the US. So it's pretty standard to me. I commented to friends of mine when I returned that I was surprised at how much better security was at FRA than in the US at that time.
