I echo what others have said. I sat in the buddy seat to have lunch with my Mum on a LHR-JFK flight. While I would not want to sit there for the whole flight, the ability to converse with your dining partner far outweighed any discomfort of the seat.

The First crew didn't blink an eye and set the table up for two with their usual class and elegance. My Mum had a blast too.
