If you rent sixt you nearly always get an upgrade...

So is it true that hertz has such a stupid upgrade-rule or do they give higher upgrades as well?
Welcome to FT flylogic I find that Hertz can be more generous to 5* in US than Europe. Upgrades for Cars/hotels/Flights seems to me to be more of an automatic function in US than Europe.

I use whichever discount code/coupon gives me the best deal. Often I ask when booking if there are any specials. In the US if I book a car with neverlost I very often get a better class of car as they run out of mid size cars with neverlost very quickly.
