I have miles that are set to expire (at year end?). With no flights planned before year's end, will donating some miles to charity count as a transaction to keep them from expiring?

Or do only "additions" to my account work towards keeping these miles from expiring?

If the latter, any suggestions as to how to keep them current absent a flight? Purchase 1000 miles?
