This may get me flamed, but I believe that the OP is 0% at fault and the hotel is 100% at fault. A comped room is appropriate.

Yes, I know that a back-up system, particularly for a 3:45 am wake-up call, is necessary. But if the hotel says they'll do it, they should do it.
