After living a year in Bangkok I have discovered that tipping is not customary...
...it ruins it for other people..
Without getting personal... really
Sometimes I leave the rounded change that
is customary, sometimes not. If the service isn't up to standard, I take it into consideration, and have no qualms leaving nothing.
BUT I Tip! I live in Thailand and it doesn't ruin it for me.
In Chiang Mai, it's common to earn $85USD a month. A wage of $800 in Bangkok is VERY VERY Good.
I spend THOUSANDS of dollars tipping in this country, $1, $3, $5 dollars at a time...
I'm not ruining it for other people. I don't want a prize, but I'm not about to change my ways either.
Some Thai residents get downright money hungry and spoiled... but it's not from our tiping. It's a false view of the western world, that's deeply ingrained in this culture. When I meet this type of business person, it does spoil my view of the country, but it's not the tiping that's doin it. They're just trying to get ahead in this world too
