We stayed in Miami (South Beach) over New Year in 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 - and have also stayed there at other times of the year. Late December/early January is high season price-wise, and I also remember that we had problems getting a hire car the first time as we hadn't pre-booked. Other than that I can see no reason not to go to Miami over New Year!
