Last week, I tried to fly ATL-CDG-BUD on an award. I needed to take the early flight to CDG. The 2 early flights out of ATL both had over 20 seats open in BE, and were over booked in coach. I took the sure thing and flew to PHL to get an early AF flight.
When I got to ATL for my flight to PHL, I took one more shot at trying to get a seat on DL to CDG. I was told that they would not clear anyone to BE because of the overbooked situation in Y as they might need the seats to bump people up to. I asked the same question, why doesn't DL at least clear those with upgradable tickets to free up the seats in coach ahead of time. The red coat shrugged his shoulders and said it was out of there hands. He told me that they had just been sent another memo warning them of making any exceptions to the rules.
I can understand them not giving me a BE seat as I was not on the flight, but to not clear the upgrades before the flight is stupid.
