Note that as one of Delta's new customer initiatives, they MUST tell you if a flight is overbooked if you ask. The easiest thing is to call Delta, ask for a seat assignment, and if they can't give you one, ask while. All of the previously mentioned answered (being held for airport assignment, overbooked, etc.) are valid possibilities.
