Is it worth it? You have to decide that. My perspective is a little different in that that we seem to be accumulating more miles than we have time to use; although I tend to be cheap & stingy, rulebusters & cabin upgrades are starting to look more attractive.

You can always book the award trip and hope for a bump. I have been lucky enough to have this happen to me in the last several years. I try to book during peak flying times and make sure that I ask to have my name put on the list if they have one. You get compensation and rebooked as a paying fare that earns EQMs. If traveling during spring break, most flights will be full.
