When you are connecting, you are directed to the right by the customs guys, whereas if SFO is your final destination you are directed to the right.
When you exit to the left (Connecting pax), you exit the customs hall, do a u turn back towards the domestic terminals, pass the bag recheck area, and arrive at the top of the corridor from the domestic terminal.
