I've never seen or heard of it until this thread.

I used e-checkin at the SF Hilton. I was offered many room choices including a suite on the exec level. I jumped on this and selected the suite. I was given the specific room number with the disclaimer that the room number might change. Nothing about changes in the room type.
I stopped by the front desk to pick up the keys and was disappointed to be told that our room wasn't available and that we would be in a standard room. Apparently the person in the suite extended their stay and the hotel employee didn't move us to a comparable room as we were told that the hotel was sold out.
I spoke to a manager and ultimately ended up in a jr. suite with a second room for our daughter. Both rooms were eventually comped as we ended up with a view of another building as well as a different room type. Not the bay view that we were looking forward to.
I was told that I could have called to confirm that we actually are getting the specified room indicated via e-checkin. I don't think this should be necessary.
