I think that's legit - I've stood in the line before a 4-5 hour flight just because I knew I'd be sitting for so long. However, I'd prefer to take that time walking around the airport instead of standing in a line. What I don't understand are those people who get in line early but then sit down on the (presumably dirty) floor for 45 minutes or so.
I've done that before too, but most of the time, I stand in line for two reasons:
1. Because I'm going to be sitting for so long on the plane, and
2. I'm freakishly tall and try at all costs to get exit rows.
