Schools are a very emotive subject.
My son goes to one of the top 100 state primary schools in England. They always have fantastic results in the 3 Rs. Great... Except he's dyslexic and can barely read at 7. They've been trying to get him a statement of special needs, which I don't think he actually needs. His dyslexia is very mild and he excels in maths and especially music. He plays piano better than his teacher (as his music teacher admits). If he was academically bright, he would excel at this school. But there is no route for kids that don't fit their mould.
However, my daughter is on a "gifted child " programme. She is indeed very clever for a 4 year old. She excels at the same school. Recieves headteacher's awards weekly.
I would say both of my kids are equally bright, but, in very different ways. I feel it's a shame that a school feels it necessary to perform in just one area, yet neglect children that may be very talented in another.
I spend a fortune on private lessons in music for my son. I personally play the violin, flute and clarinet (all to some degree!!!!) So I try to teach him a little of what I know. I am generally very against the private sector. I am a product of it myself. But, what should a parent do when a child's talents are so blatently ignored?
