My most recent ATM experiences abroad have been in Thailand and Hong Kong.
The credit union plain old non-VISA ATM card's dollar-to-baht rate was quite comparable to cash rates posted at the money exchange booths. Therefore, as far as I'm concerned, the only real expense appeared to be the $1 ATM fee.
The credit union VISA check card's dollar-to-baht rate also appeared to be comparable to the exhange booth rates. However, in addition to the $1 ATM fee VISA also assessed
an additional foreign currency exchange fee which was 2% of each transaction amount.
