It's a strange and complicated arrangement, but comes in handy; take the family on vacation and you earn a free ticket, instead of having a few thousand miles expire in the kids accounts before they get enough to redeem.
This actually just came in extremely handy for me a few weeks ago. It's great for those occasions when one person may have 35000 miles and another may have 15000 miles and you need two tix for 50,000 or something along those lines...
