Although I suspect it motivates few of these questions, there is one legitimate reason if you're talking from someone who's from the same town/area - you might know people in common.

It happened to me last night. Alas, we quickly worked out that she was so much younger than me that I was more likely to have been babysitting her contemporaries than knowing them through school connections. (Although it was very flattering that she thought otherwise at first.)
