Depends on the airline. As kevinsac mentioned correctly it was used for supersonic flights on AF and BA when they were operating the Concorde.

On LH it is and has always been used for non-revenue travel in C, i.e. for travel agents or airline employees. If you were on a paid ticket you will likely have to chase after the miles because R class does not allow mileage accrual.
