I've only had this experience once. Chapel Hill Gal was on a complimentary, upgrade ineligible ticket. I upgraded my ticket with miles and we switched half way through (ORD-HKG).
I really like that UA rule allowing one switch per flight. Have used it a number of times with colleagues who were not able to upgrade... Each of us can get a nap in on a traspac. Be awere that most FA's are not aware of the rule, but generally the Purser is.
