My wife and I flew MH business class LAX-TPE-KUL a few weeks ago on a non-refurb'd 747 and then again just a few days ago KUL-BKI-NRT on a 772 with refurbished cabin. I think the 772 is what they have on the KIX-KUL route you are talking about. I'd suggest going with the xtra 10k miles for business, this has to be the best deal out there. The difference between coach and biz is worlds more than 10k miles.
Here is my 2 cents (I posted some preliminary comments in a recent thread in this forum about the LAX service):
The non-refurb'd cabin- These business class seats are not even on par with NW's old "classic" WBC seats (like those still remaining in the DC-10s) much less anything near the new WBC flat seats in the A 330's and 747-400s, but they arent bad. The dont recline as much as I would like them too, and for anyone 6 ft or more in height I think they are a little less than what I would like. I wasnt uncomfortable, but I was a bit disappointed for a flight that was over 15 hours. The seats have a mix of power and manual adjustments (mostly manual) and also seem to be a bit narrower than others I've been on. The armrests were really worn and not clean. The cabin as a whole was pretty out of date and rundown on this plane, it was several years overdue for an upgrade. The service was very nice, a lot more attentive than what you get on NW, but I dont think it made up for the seats on such a long flight. Overall, I was bummed, I only shelled out 90k miles per ticket b/c I redeemed pre-march 2005 (as part of a long trip around SE Asia) but I still would have rather been on NW's new WBC seats for this longhaul flight.
newly refurb'd cabin- Now these are much nicer. We were told when we called for seat assignments there was "no chance" that our 777 from KUL-NRT (with quick stop in BKI) would have the new seats, but to our delight we walked on to a gleaming new cabin. Nice considering this was a red-eye. We sat in row 5 (j and k) and it is in its own mini cabin. Pros about row 5 are that its kind of private and that was nice for sleeping. But cons were that the engines are right outside your window. And I really had to protest to get them to stop Y passangers from coming up and using the biz restroom near us. The FAs pretty much hing out up in the main biz cabin and in the galley between the two, with curtains drawn so they couldnt even see what was going on in our mini-cabin. There was actually a line of coach people waiting next to our seats at one point! I asked once politely and then embarassed my wife by really complaining- then the FA was very apoligetic and snapped the curtains and made another few announcements, that seemed to stop people from coming up. But I don't know if I would recommend row 5 b/c of this, most people dont want to come off looking like a jerk for asking that the FAs patrol the cabin like this (I got a good night of sleep so I dont really care). Things I liked about the new seats is that they are really adjustable, totally electronic, and go flat (they also have a good almost flat cradle setting). I would rate them as right there with the new NW WBC seats. We also flew on Lufthansas new biz seats during this trip, I think they beat out both MH and NW, but you can get a good night sleep and be comfortable with any of these. What I really did not like was the fact that one armrest is higher than the other. I dont understand this, but it is the case. The video system is much better, but the movie selection is not as good as on NW. The new cabin lighting is nice too, very bright to wake you up and good settings for the rest of the flight.
