I recall personal Hi-8 players with flip up LCD screens being used in Business Class before BizE, but I thought it was an interim step as they knew the cabins would be redone for BizE in the near future. Personally, I thought this to be superior to the in-seat system, as you could pause and rewind, minimizing the distraction of cabin service. But I doubt it was cost effective.
