My 20-year-old son is spending next semester at Maynooth University near Dublin. He plans to do some weekend traveling around Europe.

I'd like to get him some overall travel guides with the options for students. What do you recommend?

While I'm at it, what's the best (cheapest) way to get from Dublin to "the Continent" so he can connect with the European rail systems?
