Unless your mom is six feet or over in height, 31J should be fine for a woman of average stature. As a man at 6'3.5" in height and size 14 shoes, seats 31A/J requie a little adjusting but not much.
I'm 6'2, and I noticed that the seat has been moved forward only because there no longer is a window in the window seat, not because there is less leg room. I guess the slight angling of legs didn't bother me in the least. The lack of window does bother me, and it also means that one of the reasons for taking the window seat in the first place is gone. Or maybe this means I should switch to 767 routes whenever possible.
