Regarding the curent amtrak /continental mileage offer for base and elite qualification miles when connecting at Newark to an Amtrak train ( and actually regarding any other amtrak train offer)-

Do I actually have to take the train ride to get the miles or can I just purchase the train tickets and be done with it ( and still get the credit)?

I am asking 'cause I will be 700 miles short of platinum and cant find a reasonably priced mileage run out of LGA in the time frame I need it. Any suggestions on a good mileage run would be appreciated to. Thanks
