Obviously jet stream is the reason - surprisingly, my wife and I sat next to someone on the LAX - IAD redeye last Friday night who tried to tell us that the flight was quicker going East because of the Earth's rotation. We were connecting from Tahiti and tired so we We both just smiled and said "interesting".

Besides, the earth actually spins the other way and, if true, would make Westbound flights faster.
