I've been PLT on AA for a number of years now--and read FT when I can--so I am almost embarrassed by this question. I need to fly on AA for business from LAX to YVR in early March. I see a good Alaska rate for $286 and then see the same flights as "AA codeshare service" for $382.90. From what I see from the AA site, Alaska trips count towards not simply mile accrual but also qualifying miles. I can't explain the discrepancy in pricing, but more importantly, can I book the ticket through Alaska, pay $100 less, and still end up with the qualifying miles?
