I actually ended up waiting and waiting, and a few weeks ago I got a Sony Ericsson Z520a instead. I like it a lot, and it's supported in the US and currently sold subsidized by Cingular, unlike the Panasonics. I went ahead and switched to Cingular, which may or may not have been a good idea, but I think it's going to work out okay. The phone is really small and light, and it does about everything I could want it to. (Except, whatever happened to persistent alerts? I had a Qualcomm on Sprint a few years back that would keep beeping at me if I missed a call or message and hadn't checked the phone. None of the phones I've had since do that despite their further sophistication in every other way.)
