MileKing, this is admittedly off-topic by if you got a room on an SPG floor that's probably it as far as upgrades go, the hotel was likely perfectly compliant with program terms & conditions. Would have been nice to get an upgrade for a birthday, but that's certainly outside the scope of the program. SPG marketing of gold upgrades far outstrips the fine print, and so you can always fall back on the marketing as their promise and complain.... but SPG Gold doesn't offer you anything more than a 'preferred room' which a room on an SPG floor would meet.
