What do you recommend -- how far in advance should one book it to have a realistic chance of availability of the requested dates?

Is there some way online to check what availability looks like at certain dates? Or do I have to call the Award Reservation # ?

Thanks.
If you join the BA FF program you can check award availablility. Have done this in the past and was able to present the AS award desk with the dates and flights which saved everyone time and I was able to peruse the best itinerary.

As far as availablility, try to be flexible and creative. I'm based out of SEA and have ended up with SFO and YVR connections to LHR. Also remember that AS will fly you to your departure city (in first if a business award) so in addition to YVR and SFO check ORD, DEN, PHX, LAX, BOS, EWR, IAD, DFW, MCO, MIA
