I too just made Platinum for the first time after many years and was really looking forward to some sort of upgrade on a stay at the Westin Times Square NY this weekend. I chose the Westin because of the comments on this board over the W TS which I had previously stayed at as a Gold member.

I know I shouldn't expect an upgrade but what I got really made me mad! I had booked a Deluxe room on a high floor and got just that. Part that got me mad is that they put me in the first room off the elevator. Anyone that travels knows this is the worst and loudest room to have on any floor. Sorry nothing else available!! I realize that an upgrade is not guaranteed but putting me next to the elevator is a joke. (something I might expect from a Priceline stay but not as a Platinum) Front desk manager evidently didn't want to deal with me because he also told me they didn't have anything else. Call to SPG Concierge confirmed availability so I know that was all a bunch of crap!

Looks like its back to the W TS next time! As a Gold I always at least got a corner room there. As for the room size, I thought the Westin room was smaller than the W room. What have I learned from this:

1. Stick to the hotel you know and have stayed at (in this case the W TS)!
2. Don't expect anything other than the amenity mentioned by someone previously.

I really don't know why the Westin is the preferred *W property in NYC according to this board.
