Have you thought about shuffling the itin around? If fly UA into MEL then could do QF or DJ MEL-ADL-SYD-BNE fairly cheaply, then NZ BNE-AKL on 747 (ie longhaul product) and AKL-SYD or MEL then UA back to usa.
I'll stick with NZ or TG then. Sadly, I can't shuffle the itin around as I have to be in England just before Aus & then Mrs KiwiPanda has work commitments in BNE & AKL. Of course, ideally I'd like to try the new NZ longhaul product but as we all know, there is no award availability (for UA 1p anyway).
