Can you get one award Australia-Canada with stopover in Mexico?

Does anyone know whether it is possible to issue a single award from Australia to Toronto with a stop over in Mexico? As far as the max miles rule goes it would be less than 10% more than the shortest route SYD-LAX-YYZ, but I was told by one UA rep that this will have to be 2 awards. You'd have to go SYD-LAX-xYYZ-DEN-xPVR-SFO-(LAX)-SYD. I agree that it looks like a bit of a detour on the way back, but it's not that many more travelled miles.

Is there a limit of sectors you can do on an award flight? I know LH has restrictions if you use their miles depending on the distance you travel you get x amount of connections. Does UA have a similar rule?

AC has a direct YYZ-PVR flight but does not offer this service in July. But I don’t know whether he would have allowed even this on one award.

If anyone has a creative idea how we could get both PVR and YYZ as one award from SYD, please let me know. Maybe we could do an open jaw to YYZ and back from PVR and just purchase a one way? But I guess it would be cheaper to purchase a return from LAX to PVR in that case.

Can you do both an open jaw and use a free stopover in one award or is it one or the other?

Any other ideas?
