I've had several times where at ORD checkin they've looked at my reservation - said "this is nuts" and rebooked me direct. In fact read some of the hard core MR people postings who have to be vigilant that doesn't happen. I'm sure there's an official answer, but I think it depends on availible seats, and the person you're dealing with.
