Yes, I remember those days very well. In most hotels, if you simply screwed the cable directly into the TV, instead of going through the Spectravision box, you could see everything for free. And the hotel couldn't tell you did anything, provided you put everything back the way you found it. Some hotels put protective sleeves over the cable connectors, but they were easily defeated.

Too bad the current systems are too smart for such tricks!
