I second that.... I've run into numerous people who thought Washington DC and WA state are in the same place. This includes a gal who lived in New York and thought she was crossing the continent in five hours when driving to DC. This perplexed her further when her family moved out to CA and it took six days of driving.

At that point I pulled out a map and set her straight.
I've known southern CA residents who thought Baja California was part of the US state.
My late grandma used to live in NM, and plenty people thought she lived in the country of Mexico.
Some people think New England is somewhere in Europe.
Very few can name the 50 states.
Even people who have lived in WA all their lives have a hard time understanding the difference in locations of Vancouver, WA and Vancouver, BC.
Many from the southern states think WA is very close to AK, and I'm often asked how we deal with all the snow in Seattle.
East of the Mississippi, many don't realize how vast the West is.
Texans refuse to believe Alaska is over twice the size of their great state.
The list goes on and on....
