A potential side benefit of getting your wife 2P status would be the possibility of getting a Great Offer. I have no idea how UA determines who is targeted and which members receive which offers (i.e. 2000 extra EQMs per flight flown vs. 5000, EQMs for faxing in competitors' statements) but I'd think that UA might be very interested in a newly minted 2P. Sounds like she's gonna be flying a lot in 2006 so, who knows, with a nice Great Offer bonus she could make it to 1P no problem or even 1K.
